I bought them all because i figured i would need all the adapter for down the road use. As i am about to start a electronics course and will probably use other chips besides the ones in RJs equipment.

Just my 2 cents (or less)

I have previously ordered my pickit2 from microchip direct and I already have my zif adapters from ebay. Today I ordered the pickit3 again from microchip.
