Does SSR4 with DMX option have snubbers?
« on: September 27, 2011, »
I tried searching but couldn't find a clear answer. I assume since there are not 47k ohm 1/2 watt resistors for each channel like the LE the answer is no. Not a big deal as I still have my home made snubbers I can put on the strings but wanted to double check.

No. The SSR4's do not have snubbers built in to the circuit board.

What does snubbers do. DOes it make the dimming smoother or something?

It helps LED light strings dim.

So if I plan on using some ssr4's with led's this year do I need snubbers?

I thought the snubbers eliminated the flicker on LEDs.
I could be wrong. I have old brain cells.

Some LED strings don't draw enough power to cause the outputs to stay turned on so they will not light up 100% of the time.  Snubbers create a power draw large enough to break over that minimum power threshold needed to keep the outputs turned on when they are supposed to be on.

So how do you go by making a snubber, just adding a 470 ohm resister across to both channel connectors?

Here is the simple way, at least it was for me.  This is from the downs family christmas (see link at bottom of pdf file)  I made a 100 last year and eliminated all my flicker on my older LEs

Be careful, recommended snubber resistor is 47KOhm 1/2 watt, and yes you can connect the resistor across each channel connector.

The snubbers are only needed if you are using LED lights. Some LEDs work fine without them. Others don't. I would suggest plugging your lights into the controller and try dimming them. If they work as expected, you should be fine without the snubbers. If not, then try adding the snubber.

Well yes i should of noted the 1/2 watt resistor. Thats what i install in the controler boards i created.

As Leo said, it is a 47K (47000 ohms) 1/2W resistor.  A 470 ohm resistor will make lots of smoke instead.

Some people use a C7 or C9 bulb accross the string to do this and it tends to work much better than a resistor.

I may need to use them, the controllers i built for last year, when it would be off, some of the leds would still have a little bit of a glow to them.
