It depends on the current draw of the strings.  It is 128 for the smart strings.

For the SSC (Smart String Controller) RJ limited the node count to 128 because of the power concerns.

This is in a LE discussion group, so I assume the question refer to the LE and not SSC.  The LE provides 110V power to the 16 channels, so the count is not a factor, it is the amps.  The amps is dependent on the strings you are using and the numbers of those strings.  So, there is no fixed number.

Four amps per channel, fourty per express, as long as you don't go with the bridge option, ie, you have two power cords.

from the wiki...

Using both power inputs (ie: two cords on two separate circuits (ie: breakers))
40 amps Total for the Express with approved heat sink attached
4 amps per channel maximum with approved heat sink attached

Using one power input (see below - Appendix A single power input mod)
20 amps Total for the Express with approved heat sink attached
4 amps per channel maximum with approved heat sink attached

Use LEDs.  Last year I ran 24,000 LEDs off of a single 15-amp circuit.

I used kaxled (from China) last year.  Very satisfied.  You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

This year I am using Ray Wu (also from China) to get RGB pixels.  Ray Wu is the guy nearly everyone in DLA uses.  I was also very satisfied.  You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Locally, people scrounge after holidays to get discounted lights -- WalMart, Target, Hobby Lobby, Garden Ridge, ...
There are also several online light sources in the US that make bulk orders to China.
