I have used the Renard DIY system the past four years and there was a 100ft cap on the maximum length of cable from the computer to the first controller and after every subsequent controller (Serial Data).  Would this necessarily be the same case for DMX protocol?

but since this is the ethredongle forum, pixelnet should have about the same limitation maybe?

and remember from switch to etherdongle is still limited to 328ft as that's a limitation of ethernet.

If you use rs232 at the computer end, you're right about the short initial run from computer to the first Renard.  If you start with or convert to rs485 from the computer the initial run can be upwards of 1000'. All the Renards I'm familiar with convert their output to rs485 so the distance between controllers can be huge.
