The dmx dongle uses a 28 zif socket. The PIC18F2450 required for the dongle has 28 pins. Might buy the other sockets, as the other controllers chips use different chips.

I bought one of these "universal" zif sockets for my Pickit.

The only thing that it does not include is a cable.
It's not about more, it's about enough.

Sockets are mostly for the older hardware - USB dongle, freestyle, DMX ssr4, & mr16.

All of the new stuff has a six pin icsp programming header on the board - EtD, express, ssc, active hub, wireless modules, aether, aeon, bobcat, & dmx tester.

I have the same, but mine included a cable. I bought mine directly from their website, sure-electronics.com, but 10.99 with free shipping is cheaper then I paid (9.99 + shipping).
Remove the top plastic cover and it makes it easier to use the zif sockets.

It is nice to be able to program a chip off the board, especially if the board is in your yard and you are swapping a chip.

Here is the section in the Wiki with a list of members who can program PICs plus two "barebones" programers.  I have built these barebone programmers and they worked fine with Pickit 2 and 3.

The "Red Neck" PIC programing with a breadboard requires either 4.7k resis, or a 0.1uf Cap. can I use the 4.7k and 0.1uf from the dongle BOM to program the PIC before I solder them on to the PCB?

My first pics for a USB dongle were programmed just strait wired to an old socket...

Now I have one of those 40 pin universal adapters, but there are no caps or resistors... Seems to work fine.
