Programming for other DMX controllers...
« on: February 14, 2012, »
Can the Bobcat be programmed to test other DMX controllers? Like a Renard with DMX protocol. Maybe have two different PICs, one for Lynx and one for Renard. Thanks for any info either way!

Does the renard with dmx respond to dmx?    Dmx is dmx?

The Renard doesn't deal with DMX in the normal way but the tester should still work with it.  The trick it to only connect one Renard to it at a time.

You'll need a pin converter for Renard. The boards use pins 4 and 5 instead of 1 and 2. But they are reversed from LOR/D-Light (where pin 4 is Data + it becomes Data - )

so for clarity of people readin this thread...

Renard uses which pin for data+, -

LOR uses which pin for data +, -

LYNX  =   Data + Pin1   Data - Pin2  (White with orange stripe/Orange)
LOR   =    Data + Pin4   Data - Pin5 (Blue/White with Blue Stripe)
Renard = Data - Pin4     Data + Pin5 (Blue/White with Blue Stripe) Pins 1 & 2 Gnd

Renard is actually Data - Pin4    Data + PIN 5
and ground on Pin 1 & 2 for the RS-485 protocol.

Please refer to this link for information on all Renard pin outs

There is also a DMX (RJ-45) to Renard Connection diagram on the bottom of the above page.
That diagram shows the pin out for a cable adapter that must be used for running DMX data into a Renard, if the Renard is also flashed with the DMX firmware.

Is renard using pin 4 for both positive and ground?

that would not be possible.  This is a typo.  Pin 5 is positive and pin 4 is ground.

it's not really ground, but more of the negative voltage

That's not really correct.  The RS485 ues a differential voltage.  When the + is a t 5V and the - is at 0V that is a positive differential and is considered a 1, when the - is at 5V and the + is at 0V tht is considered a negative differential and is considered a zero.  There is no negative voltage on either wire but you are correctin saying that neither is a ground so I was wrong there.  Pin 4 is the negative lead, not the ground.

Since there have been multiple back and forths, could someone summarize in table form the accurate info?
when I saw a latter message with incorrect info i missed that there had already been a correctio, then follow-on discussions ensued, and we missed seeing a final conclusion.

i think most of the threads could benefit for a final summary.

Here is the updated table.

LYNX  =   Data + Pin1   Data - Pin2  (White with orange stripe/Orange)
LOR   =    Data + Pin4   Data - Pin5 (Blue/White with Blue Stripe)
Renard = Data - Pin4     Data + Pin5 (Blue/White with Blue Stripe)
