power test on express shows data light
« on: August 13, 2012, »
i have built two of my express kits now. the first one i did, the data light comes on and the 3 led display lights don't. the second kit i put together, the data light is off and the led display goes threw a serious of numbers/letters and stops on 001.

on the first board i built, both power lights came on with no issues, installed the chips and now the data light comes on and there is no ethernet cable connected. what is wrong? i have checked the back of the pcb with a magnifier and there is no solder bleed off between solder joints. no smoke, no snap crackle pops,

thanks in advance

The series of letters of numbers should spell out Lynx Express 60hz and it is normal for the data light to be off. If you press the mode button until the LEDs say tst and then press the button next to the LEDs the LEDs should cycle followed by each channel lighting up one at a time and then all of them flashing. Of course some pictures of both sides of your boards would help greatly, but are the number LEDs facing the right way on the other board?

ok so the one board is good, goes threw the test you describe and works fine. the other board that has the data light lit. led display has decimal at the bottom like it's supposed. there is no visual evidence" so it seems " that says " this aint right" here are a couple of pictures, hope this helps.

Greetings,,,

The pic should still be ok.  Check any other parts again just in case.

double checked everything that i could a couple of times and everything "seems" to be right. still no led display. i even pulled each display out and checked the pins to make sure they were all good and they checked out ok.

Check the pins on the chip to the right of the display.

If nothing is wrong, swap the IC and the display with the working unit you have.

If they are ok, I would check the 2700 pf capacitor that is between the right display digit and the IC.  The coating of that capacitor goes down the leads.  If the capacitor is inserted too far it does not make connection.  If you can not see the metal of the leads on the component side of the PCB try raising the capacitor.  There is a note in the assy instructions regarding this.

Keep us posted on your progress

turns out the pic was bad. i took the working one and put it in the board not working and it's all good. i used a pic from another kit for now until i can get another one. so now i have 2 units working properly and a kit short of a pic. oh well, i have 6 kits total so it's not like i am going to be done with them all tonight. thanks to all of you for your help and input. did i fry the pic by putting it in backwards or is it a defect possibly?

I would try re-flashing the pic before trashing it. It might of just lost its programming.
