The DMX data is one way. The usb dongle outputs DMX on the first pair - wires 1&2. I think one of the other wires is grounded, but no other connections are required - or even available. If you made a cable with just 1&2 going to 4&5 and it didn't work, you probably had it hooked up backwards...
