I must be missing something I was going to update the firmware on the etherDongle, in the pickit 3 stand alone program it does not list the chip, however in the mplab application it does list the chip through the pickit 3.

any suggestions

thank you

on mine it is PIC32MX460F512L

I have tried to find the Device update for the pickit 3 programmer but have been unable to do so

Also the last one or two in my PicKit 3 list.
Be sure you have installed the latest "operating system" for the PicKit 3.
What I have is PK3FW_012633.jam  (on the PicKit3 menu, at the bottom of tools is the Operating System choice)
The file was in my Program Files/Microchip/Pickit3 folder.

ps, if there is a newer version, I don't have it but would appreciate a link!

Bring up mplab and it should ask to update your pickit 3.  As I recall it does that automatically as long as your pickit 3 is connected.  Been a long time since I did mine.

mplab to update the pic,
pickit programmer to update PICs

I finally had sucess, make sure that you have the correct version of the pickit 3 program
Applicaiton Version 1.0.0.0
Jam Version 01.26.33-06 ( PK3FW_012633.jam  file)

there is a newer jam version but I had it fail,
I also tried the new mplab x and the version x programer which looks promising but still is had to use.
also I found that the pickit 3 scripting tool is not worth playing with yet (it is pickit 2 upgraded) and I could not make it work.

just my observations hopefully it might help someone that encounters the same problem.

thanks again for all your suggestions
