Connector strips extremely tight (coop 2)
« on: October 25, 2012, »
Hi,

This is not new and it has already been mentioned by other DIYers. I just wanted to share my experience about the strip connector that is too tight and won't fit. I am able to get it into the holes extremely slowly pushing hard on it but I don't know if I will be able to get it all the way through. I may have to pry the connector out in order to drill the holes bigger.
What do you use to drill the holes bigger?

Thanks Chris.

I finally got it in... it is so tight the pins probably don't need solder!  ;)
I have a second board to assemble. I don't really want to drill the holes bigger. I am concerned doing damages to the board. If you guys can tell me more about your experience making the holes bigger, that would be great.

I provided pressure, but not force to put mine in

Besides what you have probably already ready I took the pieces apart so they were about 3-4 pins each.  This way they were able to push through easier.  I also had to do some slight work "By Hand" with a drill bit.

Don't shoot me but since Pressure is Force over Area you had to use force... <res. I basically did the same thing and it was hard! I should have used the technique used by Jeffl, consisting off taking apart the strips to reduce the area so less force to achieve the same pressure so less effort  :o!

OK, so more "filing" than "drilling" then. I appreciate the tip.

you might also try putting the terminal strip in the freezer for about an hour while you get the board ready.  you could also warm up the board with a lamp or heat gun a little as well right before attempting to put in the terminal strip.  It will still be tight but it should loosen them up a little.
If at first you don't succeed,
your not cut out for sky diving

hehe, I just meant that I worked it in gently, rather than trying to ram it in there.

if you do one at a time, remember that they still secure into each other, and i believe once you have one in, you can only put the next one in going in one direction, as they aren't keyed all the way through. Starting at the right edge of the board (far away from the transformer) and work your way to the left.
