Please look at function and use for the 4 port passive hub in the wiki.

It was always intended to be used off of one of the powered ports from the active hub. The power pins of the Input port are not connected.

It was never intended to be used stand alone with a dongle, but it will work that way.

Ok. That makes sense. When I read passive hub in your post I was thinking 16 port since that is mostly what I have.

I'm planning to uses 3 smart strings. If things run well and I have the time I am considering a forth.
But two if things go bad.

So the 4 port hub gives you 4 universes. And splitting the data signal by four at the output of the etherdongle/conductor
gives you 4 universes.

And the programming will be a little different. Your have to set each SSC up in a different universe.

all of the hubs, can only connect to one universe at a time.

the 16 port hubs (active and passive) have a jumper for you to choose which one
the 4 port hub only connects to the universe on pins 1&2 of it's input  (which is universe #1, unless someone's doing something weird in their wiring on purpose)
To rule the entire tri-state area!  What's that? Perry the Platypus!!!

Etherdongle = 4 universes.
one universe on each of the 4 twisted pairs in the Cable connected to the output connector.

Hubs do 1 universe.

4 port Passive hub does universe on first pair, orange/white with orange stripe

Active hub allows selection of which universe, but only does 1 of them.

There is a combiner/splitter board.
In 1 pair 1 goes to out pair 1
In 2 pair 1 goes to out pair 2
In 3 pair 1 goes to out pair 3
In 4 pair 1 goes to out pair 4

Since there are no active components, the data can flow either from the in to the out or from the out to the in ports.
