Before i put my lights up this fall i plan on installing a roof anchor. My brother is a contractor. I have helped him build houses in the past. I am handy with tools. I have installed sub-panels, replaced roofs, put plumbing in , finished my basement, installed oak flooring, built furniture i have sold in the past .etc. I don't think this is a big deal, i am handy with my hands.
The only thing, i am afraid of heights.

I was thinking of Something like

I dont like being up 20-30' hanging over my rocks.

Are there are methods to safely install lights on the roof. The last time i did a roof job, i wore a harness.
I know u can rent lifts, i just think that is going to get real expensive.

U can click on street view and see the front of my house here.

I have thought about something like this as well as my roof is much worse than yours.  Someday i may try something, but as for now I am only doing what can be done with both feet on my 32' ladder.

I had a steep roof 13 years ago.  When I started looking to move one of my requirements was for a roof I could feel comfortable walking on.  Good luck with whatever you decide.  And I was only doing static lights back then.

As a contractor this will be your best bet for your type of roof. Just make sure when you anchor it you use 3" screws and dont go through your shingles but under them so you dont get water leaks.

I don't really like walking on my roof since it helps tear up the shingles sooner. My plan for 2012 is to make a system where I use PVC pipe and some hardware to hang my lights where I can do most if not all of the work from a ladder instead of getting on the roof.

I don't like roofs. I hire a guy to come out and put the 2nd story lights up after Halloween and he comes out after New Years and takes them down. Costs me $100.

I have the easiest answer of all, don't put them on the roof.

How to be safe on a roof. Do you use a roof anchor?

My house had anchors on it when built. After falling off the roof over the garage I bought a harness and fall limiter off eBay .   I don't use them anymore as it's a big hassle and I feel like I can be safe now and just follow safe practices instead.

When I fell off the roof, it was because it  was stupidity:

- it was almost dark (could not see well)
- wife said don't do it (I did anyways)
- I wasn't aware there was ice on the roof (there was under the downspout, nowhere else)
- I wasn't aware of all the downspout locations and slippery spots on the roof

The only good thing is I wasn't really doing anything ... so it was a straight forward jump off the roof over the garage, maybe 11' up ... so
no bad compared to some ski jumps I've done onto ice.
