I'm getting ready to purchase the cat5 that I will need for my display. Is there a special cat5 cable I need for outdoor use and where is the cheapest place to purchase.

monoprice.com gets the most votes each time the question is asked.
as far as outdoor use -- the standard cables are fine. you won't be keeping them outside for the entire year, and an expensive cable is not justified IMO.

Stranded is better than solid due to the flexibility and moving around. But solid will work just try not to bend it too much.
Or you will have no blink blink .

Stranded is REQUIRED if you are using smart string controllers.

MAN! I need to look at more of these wikis! I bought my cat 5 last year from Ace hardware and Best Buy. I feelike I was on the losing end of a cattle prod right about now.

That's because you were. I've been there, needing an extra cable on a weekend and forking over ten times what I paid to graybar. I keep spares in stock now, just long ones and keep my crimp gun handy to cut to required length.

As long as you have the crimping tool and the rj45 ends it should be the same. The only issue would be moisture. I ran into some moisture issues on some cables I made last year. I had to buy new premade ones to fix the problem. Although plasti-dip or heat shink tubing may have cured that.

I've added a touch of silicone at the end where the cable slides into the rj45 end and that has helped me. I also try to make sure the cables go up into the device they are connecting to. If the cable comes from above I make a drip loop below the device and run the end of the cable up.

that's fine for all signal cables except going from the hub to a smart string controller.
