UGH, Does RAID Bug Spray and PCBs mix?
« on: May 23, 2012, »
Hi Folks,

Wife just called me. Apparently there was a few ants around my Active Hub, Passive Hub and SSC v2. They were powered off and she sprayed it all with Raid Ant killer. Note: When she uses spray she uses most of the can.

Should I just leave it as is or try to clean it off when I get home from work?

If I should clean it, what do I use?

That reminds me of the story of how Deadmau5 got his name. I personally have never tested the conductivity of bug spray. Maybe alcohol?

Ya, try to clean it with alcohol and a paint brush, I use those to clean the flux off my PBC's after I have solder them together. No problem with them just let them dry good. I also use a towal to clean of the resadue when they are still wet to make then shinny again.

She sprayed populated circuit boards?  Some bug spays leave a sticky, oily residue.  I don't know if it would become conductive over time or if would attract moisture.  If you try alcohol, see if you can find the anhydrous (pure) one.  It's not found in drug stores.  Normal rubbing alcohol is 70% alcohol however I have seen it as high as 90%.  The balance of the mix is water which might be ok for surface cleaning, but if you try and flood the board, you might get water in places you don't want.  I got a can of pure alcohol for cleaning electronics at my local electronics supply house (not Radio Shack  ;D ).  Also minimize your exposure.  Any solvent that can carry the poison could transport it through your skin into your bloodstream.  I typically use nitrile gloves and change them often to avoid chemical penetration.

Honestly though, I'm not sure if cleaning would make it worse.  Do you have any Corrosion X?  I guess if I was in your situation and made the decision to bite the bullet and risk cleaning it, I would suspend the boards over a container and spray the boards with 100% alcohol in a spray bottle and let it drip off into the bucket.  Let that dry then spray it with Corrosion X and let that drip off.

I would almost say wash it with acetone.  But it would probably start eating all the plastic parts and take the screen print off your board.

Maybe pull the PICs off first and clean those separately?

worse case scenario, trepidation is selling a smart string hub as part of the items he's selling.

Since 1 item was a v2 SSC your wife really takes beta testing to heart. Isn't the purpose of beta testing to eliminate bugs?

I hope the coop kits have all the bugs removed. I hate bug bombing new parts.

Have Fun!

Go to the auto parts store and get Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner
It is designed to remove oily residue off highly sensitive elctronics
